History of Mount Pleasant

At the turn of the 20th century, the Mount Pleasant founders lived in a world where most residences for the elderly sheltered only those who filled particular requirements for race, ancestry, sex, or religious affiliation.  As you can probably imagine, these policies made it difficult to find homes for the elderly.  As a group of concerned citizens watched another elder home fail, leaving twenty people without resources and destined for almshouses, they decided to make a change.

In 1901 this group decided to open their own home with these principles in mind:

bullet Mount Pleasant will be a haven for women and men regardless of ethnicity or religion.

bullet Mount Pleasant will provide for the health and well-being of its residents through compassionate, professional care.

With this humanitarian design, the Mount Pleasant Home became a unique facility in the Boston area and began a long history of quality care and service.
