Potted Gardens
Not many thirteen-year-olds take the time to volunteer let alone take the
time to take a whole day to lead activities with the elderly.
Our
Jessica Landau-Taylor has been volunteering at Mount Pleasant Home for
many years and most recently took on more responsibilities in order to
complete the requirements for her Bat-mitzvah. We are very lucky to
have her!
On this day, Jessica assisted the residents in potting some new plants for
display on our many outdoor porches.
Jessica is involved with her own family's garden and brought many young
plants to add to our outside vegetable garden. Residents who have
memories and experiences related to gardening are encouraged to putter
around our raised flower bed.
Having a raised flower bed offers many advantages to the elderly. If
the gardener does not have to bend down but can, rather, stand or sit,
agitation to the body is significantly reduced. We all enjoy
spending time in the sun working with plants and then watching them grow;
having a raised bed makes this work much easier on everyone.
