We Celebrate the Life of...
Maggie
McKenna
July 4, 1906
-
July 19, 2010
Margaret McKenna
holds the distinction of being the oldest resident that ever lived at
Mount Pleasant Home. She celebrated her 104th birthday eight days before
she passed away. Maggie was born on July 4, 1906 which
made her a real “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” Maggie’s long life had a bumpy
start when both of her parents died very early in her life. She then
lived with a doctor and his wife, and she credits this in her decision
to pursue a medical career. Maggie worked as an aide for over forty
years at Boston nursing homes and hospitals, primarily Mass General and
St. Elizabeth’s. She was working the night of the legendary Cocoanut
Grove Fire in Boston and remembered that night vividly. She credited her
longevity to "never smoking or drinking."

Leroy
"Popcorn" Rutherford
July 4, 1913
-
December 11, 2009
"Popcorn"
moved to Mount Pleasant Home from Back of
the Hill Apartment in May of 2008. He was born in South Carolina, the
youngest of nine children. Leroy was drafted to the Navy during World
War II, where he learned the art of pool and earned a reputation as a
pool shark as well as the nickname “Popcorn.” He worked in many
capacities after the Navy, but his favorite job was working on the
dining car for the New York Central Railroad, which travelled from New
York to Chicago regularly. He was quite proud of the impeccable service
he provided for all those years.

We Celebrate the Life of...
Frank Lucey
June 9, 1927 - August 22, 2009
A
resident at Mount Pleasant Home since June of 2004, Frank was a
regular every Tuesday and Thursday morning in the living room for Coffee
Hour, belting out Navy songs he remembered from his youth as a sailor.
Frank had a fantastic memory and could always be counted on to recall
the name of an obscure actor, the lyrics to a long-forgotten song, or
the name of any Red Sox player. Frank was a true gentleman, always
looking to take care of the women around him.

Agnes Crowley
September 1, 1911 - March
27, 2009
A long-time Brookline resident, Agnes lived at Mount Pleasant Home for
five years, from February of 2004 to March of 2009. Agnes’s life was
defined by gratitude; she was truly thankful for each blessing in her
life, no matter how small. Every morning when she picked up her Boston
Globe in the office, she would say, “Oh, you dear girl! You didn’t have
to get up! Thank you. God Bless you.” She had a kind word for everyone
and was truly a gentle soul.

Anthony McLean
May 4, 1949 - January 13,
2009
Tony was a resident
at Mount Pleasant Home for only one year but his sweet demeanor will not
soon be forgotten. He was especially close with his sister and mother,
who both live locally. Tony was like clockwork, greeting the office
staff with his big, beautiful smile every morning while picking up the
Boston Herald. Tony will be missed by
all.

David Lamb
May 6, 1926 - January 9,
2009
A resident at Mount Pleasant
Home for six years, David was truly a renaissance man. He could offer up
educated opinions on almost any subject, including horticulture, sports,
literature, world history, and animal husbandry. David was perhaps most
well-known at Mount Pleasant Home for his love of living things; he
would rise everyday before the sun to feed the birds and water the
saplings on the Mount Pleasant Home grounds. |
