12th Annual
Backyard Party
September 5 began with rain, but
by 2 PM the skies had cleared and the backyard was ready for our nearly
200 visitors!
“Green” was the theme of the
day, with all party items carefully chosen for their environmental
friendliness. With our $20 million expansion and renovation project
focused on renewable energy resources, “green” was a way to demonstrate
our commitment to the environment.
The menu was designed around
locally grown products which included free-range chicken and salads made
from produce grown at a local organic farm.

Plates, cups, napkins, and
cutlery made from cornstarch, sugarcane, and recycled paper were used.
Linens were rented from a Jamaica Plain vendor so no plastic ended up in a
landfill. The residents made centerpieces from natural elements such as
twigs, Spanish moss, and dried flowers.
Jamaica Plain neighbor and
friend, Craig Metzer, loaned creative, homemade children’s carnival games
that require no electricity and can be used again and again, such as “Fry
the Frog.” Kids enjoyed face painting and a butterfly craft made from
used soda bottles.
Guests were encouraged to stroll
the property to view the future site of our rain garden and to learn about
our the Hyde Square sheet mulching project (see related story).
Entertainment was provided by
Mount Pleasant’s very own Boston blues legend, Weepin’ Willie Robinson and
the All-Star Band. Puppeteer Lisa Manning delighted the children with her
nearly life size puppets and silly songs.
